I am currently an Associate Editor at Martindale-Hubbell in New Providence, a publisher of print and Web law firm directories. I am editing attorney and law firm listings for the directories, through a
proprietary interface to an Oracle database. There seems to be some opportunity to branch out here. They have a Bright Ideas program wherein employees can submit ideas for improvement. I've already written down several ideas relating to the editing interface, playing the usability role.

I've also finished my first freelancing job, updating a quick reference chart for the Microsoft A+ certification Core Hardware and OS Technologies tests. Research and Education Association (REA) in Piscataway asked me to change a 6-page laminated chart so that it reflects the main objectives of the new 2003 tests, which now include MS Windows Me and XP. I was lucky that my wife had a recent A+ textbook, so I used that for existing fact checking, and used the Web for filling in holes. I wrote my changes on copies of the pages on 11x17 paper.

It was really tough working a full day only to come home to more work. REA seemed pleased with the job and I felt that I made the chart more relevant to the tests. I should be getting a copy of the revised chart soon. However, I am not seeking any more freelance work for now. After one full year out of work, I was, and am, happy just to work at Martindale.
