Tech Writing Training in New Jersey

The University/College system of New Jersey offers many opportunities for training in technical writing. Whether you want to receive a full certificate, or just take a few specialty courses, New Jersey colleges will meet your needs.

Rutgers/New Brunswick offers an extensive technical writing certificate. In addition to a tech writing principles course, and a grant writing course?fairly typical in technical writing certificates?Rutgers also offers specialty courses, such as Writing for Biology/Natural Sciences and Writing for Engineers. You will find a full description of the Rutgers Certificate in Technical Writing at: http://bizntech.rutgers.edu/ certificate programs.html#tech.

NJIT offers both a BA and BS in Pro-fessional and Technical Communication. These degrees combine specialized technical writing courses such as Rutgers offers with laboratory/software courses. A sampling of these laboratory courses in-clude Information Systems and Productivity Toolware, Multimedia Communication, and Electronic Publishing Lab within complete undergraduate degrees that include foreign language study (the BA), history, math (calculus, statistics), science and a physical education (!) requirement. You can find a complete description of the programs at: http://www.njit.edu/old/catalog/undergraduate/00Fall/5.html.

Essex Community College in Newark offers a Certificate Program in Digital Media and Electronic Publishing. This certificate includes courses in Computer Enhanced Layout & Design, Desktop Publishing and Presentation Graphics, Electronic Mechanical/Pre-Press Production, Basic Web Page Design and Video Graphic Design. All community colleges also offer various courses in software applications, such as Microsoft Office. Contact your local community colleges. I hope to continue this article in the next newsletter. If there are any additions/omissions, please send them to: mdjwrites@aol.com, RE: Technical Writing Article Changes.

I also acknowledge my employment by Middlesex, Essex, and Hudson County College English Departments, and that my own certificate in Technical Writing came from Middlesex County College.
