(Meeting Postponed) Best Practices in Indexing Presented by Cheryl Landes, Technical Writer at Phoenix Controls Corporation in Acton, MA November 13, 2007 Beacon Hill at Vanderhaven Farm, Clubhouse 4300 Winder Drive,Bridgewater, NJ 08807 For those of us who write and index our own work, indexes always seem to be an afterthought. Tight deadlines and schedule slips often sacrifice index quality. Is there a solution? While chances are high that we won't be able to relax the documentation schedules, we can improve our indexes by understanding the factors involved in creating a quality index. Cheryl Landes, who has indexed technical documentation for more than 15 years, will provide some simple guidelines on how to create quality indexes every time. She calls these guidelines her "best practices of indexing." Cheryl Landes has written and indexed technical documentation since 1991 in a variety of industries, including marine transportation, software, Internet technologies, and manufacturing. For the past six years, she has worked as a technical writer for Phoenix Controls Corporation in Acton, MA, where she is responsible for writing and indexing technical documentation, marketing pieces, and training materials. She worked onsite for five years, then converted to a full-time remote employee based in Seattle in September 2006. Her work has received numerous awards at the STC chapter and international levels since 2002, including Best of Show through the Boston Chapter last year. She is active in STC and the American Society of Indexers (ASI), where she currently serves as vice president for the Pacific Northwest Chapter, one of the largest chapters in the society.
